Step by step

Pick the right model
Claude for the longest docs and best reasoning. ChatGPT if you also need the doc rendered or you want to query across multiple files.

Upload as a file, don't paste
Preserves structure and headings. AI can cite page numbers.

Ask for a structured summary first
'Give me a 200-word executive summary, then the 5 most important findings as bullets, then the open questions a skeptical exec would ask.'

Drill in on what matters
'For finding #3, quote the exact passage from the doc that supports it.'

Compare against your own view
'Argue the strongest case AGAINST the document's recommendation.'
Tips
- For 5+ documents, use Claude Projects and attach them all — chat across the whole set.
- Always ask for direct quotes when fact-checking. If the AI can't quote it, it likely made it up.
- Keep a 'questions to ask' template you reuse for every quarterly report or contract.
Common mistakes
- • Trusting the summary without spot-checking 2–3 quotes.
- • Using GPT-4o-mini or other small models for big docs — quality drops fast over long context.
- • Pasting a contract in plaintext and losing all the clause structure.
